Community Partnerships

Having community involvement in the schools is a major deal. In Indianapolis schools the community puts on parent-focused workshops to help the parents learn about the schools and events going on in the community. Community workers also put on different events to get the students involved with activities. By putting on different events the students will have places to go and people to be involved with so they do not get in with the wrong crowd. I know in my township back home each year the commuity puts on an event with the schools in the township to raise money for the leukima foundation. This event brings in many people to run the race or just help with the event. The biggest part is that the students of the high school and middle school are a major part of putting the event together.

If there was a lack of partnership as an advocate of the community I could find ways to get involved. One way of doing this would be to go around to different businesses asking for the involvement with the schools in the community.

Family Conference

This past week we went through our family conferences and I feel that it went very well.  The night before I actually had my conference I was a little nervous.  As the conference was going on I feel that it was going very well.  I think I asked appropriate questions and had great feedback from the parent.  During the difficult conference I stayed calm and handled it the best way I could.  I feel that the conference overall went well and was a lot easier than I expected.  I feel more comfortable taking with parents even though this was just a fake situation.

blog to meth

After wathing the video about the different effects of meth users, I was alarmed especially by some of the pictures that are shown in the video. Think about if a meth lab was set by a school, what do you tell the kids when they come to you and say some on the other side of the yard gave them candy. Or if they were offered things but did not take them, parents would be coming in the school very upset. If a meth lab was around the school, it would need to be reported. To many children are affected by meth problems at there homes and consider school a safe place to go and not worry about problems. I feel students who has meth users as parents most likely will not be as involved in there child's school and the students may have less interest themselves.

Poverty in America

In America today poverty is an issue for the youth because they may not have the supplies they need to continue in school.  As the days go by school is starting to get more expensive for families especially ones in poverty.  Luckily there are many organizations around that donate and offer school supplies and anything else that is need to students of the less fortunate. Being a young child and being homeless can affect you in so many ways.  One be factor is if a student is homeless the more he or she grows up the more likely they will be to be tempted to get in to drugs, gangs, and any other kind of violence.  By not having a place to call home every night students may suffer in the social world because they would not have a place to go and hang out with friends.  As a teacher I would try to provide a safe place for children to play after school and provide them all the materials needed in a classroom. I would also do my research and find any shelters in my area in case parents may come to me with questions on where they may be able to go.

EDEL 231 Reflection

All throughout high school I was set on becoming an orthodontist. In my junior year of high school I took a pre dental class followed by a dental assisting class my senior year. After completing my externship with my orthodontist I decided I did not want to pursue that field any longer. Looking back i made a stupid decision because I should have taken teaching classes in high school. In the summer of 2007 i had the opportunity to baby sit for a lady that actually worked at the orthodontist that I go to. I watched her 6 year boy 5 days a week. By the end of the summer I had realized that teaching was what I wanted to do with my life. Every day or every other day we would have lessons which he would have to complete before being able to go out and play. His neighbor realized what we were doing with different lessons and asked I would mind letting his son work on the lessons also. Of course I didn't mind it gave me the chance to feel like a real teacher. We would do different math, and language arts lessons and sometimes have an art lesson and make gifts for their parents. To me it felt almost like a school environment because there would be lunch time, homework time and also time to play outside. Besides teaching him I have been around school system my whole life since my mother has been a teacher, director of counseling, and assistant principal. I guess it just took me longer to realize that teaching is my passion. Being able to say i helped that student pass a grade is rewarding to me. Therefore this is my reason for entering the teaching field.
